A Collection of Prayers

I have written and offered many of the following prayers in worship services throughout my years as Associate Pastor for Cornerstone, the contemporary worship community at Highland Park United Methodist Church.

Some of the prayers below are ones that others have offered at various times and places that have inspired me and said to God what I was unable to put into my own words. I offer all of them now to you and hope that through them you will find comfort, guidance, and, most of all, connection with God.

A Prayer in the face of Storms

Dear God,

God each of us knows storms in our lives, times of insecurity, fear, and pain…each of us knows storms in our hearts, moments of weakness, meanness, and unfaithfulness, when the pressures of life overcome us and we fail to focus on you, we fail to follow you, we fail to live with you.

God we are so grateful, we are so grateful that you forgive us before we ask, that you offer us grace without a price, and that you love us no matter what. God it is almost unbelievable, incomprehensible that you would want to be in a relationship with us, and God we celebrate that truth, we celebrate the truth that nothing can keep us from you and more importantly nothing can keep you from us, not even ourselves.

Give us your peace, God, beyond our understanding, give us your hope, give us shelter from our storms, and allow us to rest in your love.

Amen.
