A Collection of Prayers

I have written and offered many of the following prayers in worship services throughout my years as Associate Pastor for Cornerstone, the contemporary worship community at Highland Park United Methodist Church.

Some of the prayers below are ones that others have offered at various times and places that have inspired me and said to God what I was unable to put into my own words. I offer all of them now to you and hope that through them you will find comfort, guidance, and, most of all, connection with God.

Dear God,

We come before you now with heads bowed, humbled by the power of your presence in our lives. You were there in the beginning and we know you will be there in the end. But God, we know that most of all you are with us each and every day, standing next to us as we face challenges of life, celebrating with us when we are full of joy, carrying us in times of sorrow when we cannot support ourselves.

God there are so many things that we don’t understand, so many questions that we can’t answer…so many times we fail to turn to you, in praise or need, in joy or sadness, that God, we pray today that you turn our hearts and minds and souls towards you. Help us to remember that every part of this life you have given us is a blessing, every part.

We pray for all those who are suffering from grief, and pain, and hunger, and fear. God, give them hope and comfort and courage, and give us the grace and humility to serve them in your name. We thank you for all we have, for every moment of our lives on this earth, and we pray together in Jesus' name.
Amen.
