A Collection of Prayers

I have written and offered many of the following prayers in worship services throughout my years as Associate Pastor for Cornerstone, the contemporary worship community at Highland Park United Methodist Church.

Some of the prayers below are ones that others have offered at various times and places that have inspired me and said to God what I was unable to put into my own words. I offer all of them now to you and hope that through them you will find comfort, guidance, and, most of all, connection with God.

A Prayer Late in the Day

Keep watch, O God, with those who work or watch or weep this night, and give your angels charge over those who sleep.

Tend the sick, give rest to the weary, bless the dying, soothe the suffering, pity the afflicted, shield the joyous,

and all for your love’s sake.

Amen.

A Franciscan Benediction

May God bless you with discomfort at easy answers, half truths, and superficial relationships, so that you may live deep within your heart.

May God bless you with anger at injustice, oppresion, and the exploitation of people, so that you may work for justice, freedom, and peace.

May God bless you with tears to shed for those who suffer from pain, rejection, and starvation, so that you may reach out your hand to comfort them and to turn their pain into joy.

And may God bless you with enough foolishness to believe that you can make a difference in this world, so that you can do what others claim cannot be done.

Amen.
